3/5/26 Special Guest Speaker: Johannes Blom (Karolinska Institutet)

We were pleased to host Dr. Johannes Blom, Principal Researcher, Department of Clinical Science and Education, Södersjukhuset, Karolinska Institutet, for a recent seminar hosted by the Center for Targeted Machine Learning and Causal Inference (CTML).

Dr. Blom presented “Screening Smarter, Not More: A Real World Approach to Preventing Colorectal Cancer,” sharing insights on improving colorectal cancer prevention through real-world screening strategies.

Abstract: Colorectal cancer screening saves lives, but current “one size fits all” approaches often misalign resources with risk. In this seminar, Johannes Blom presents insights from Sweden’s uniquely comprehensive real world screening cohort of 400,000 individuals with 14 years of follow up. He will introduce the clinical background of colorectal cancer, outline the advantages and limitations of organized versus opportunistic screening, and demonstrate how rich population level data can reveal patterns of risk and screening behavior that traditional trial settings often miss. The talk concludes with a forward-looking discussion of the collaborative work with Berkeley researchers to develop individualized, equitable, and operationally feasible screening strategies using causal inference and longitudinal modeling.
