BBD: Nominations

BBD TRAINEE NOMINATION AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

BBD Nomination Requirements
Predoctoral trainees must have received a baccalaureate degree in at least one of the three major scientific areas in Biomedical Big Data Science (computer science or informatics, statistics and mathematics, biomedical sciences) or a related area.
  1. Student should be starting the first or second year of their PhD at the beginning of their entry into the training grant program (Fall term). Exceptions allowed.
  2. Student should have some foundational and research interests in the area of Biomedical Big Data/Precision Medicine. We expect the student to have at minimum a basic training in statistics, computation and biology.  We showcase some courses that provide such a basic foundation (see attached “prerequisites”).
  3. Must be US citizen or permanent resident.
  4. The faculty nominator should submit:
    1. a one-page nomination letter giving a brief description of the student’s proposed PhD project or sub-area of study (to assess fit with the Biomedical Big Data/Precision Medicine emphasis)
    2. a brief statement of the student's progress regarding research or plans for proposed research (written by the student)
    3. a copy of the student's undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial copies will be accepted)
    4. the student’s current e-mail address
  5. Appointments are for one year and include a monthly stipend ($2,110/month for 12 months) and tuition/fee remission in the amount of $5,914/semester for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. These rates were established in NIH Notice Number NOT-OD-20-070 and are subject to change for FY21. We allow students to take up to two years to complete the program requirements. Please note that any funding used for stipend supplementation must be non-Federal (this restriction set by NIH). However, trainees may earn additional “compensation” from Federal or non-Federal sources during the program of up to an average of 25% FTE (e.g. GSI or GSR appointments).

BBD Program Requirements
  1. Program Curriculum: trainees will complete the required program curriculum (see attached course list for Cohort 5). Curriculum modifications will be considered by the Executive Committee.
  2. Retreat: trainees will attend the Biomedical Big Data Retreat (typically held in the Fall).
  3. Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR): if not previously completed, trainees will need to enroll in RCR trainings hosted by the UCB Office of Research Administration and Compliance.
  4. Program Meetings: trainees will attend quarterly program meetings to review internship opportunities, discuss program progress and evaluation, meet with the Advisory Committee, etc.
  5. Other Program Activities (not required): travel to conferences and scientific meetings to present related research, attend workshops and trainings.
