10/08/25 Seminar: "Covariate Adjustment Using Treatment-Blinded Covariate Selection Within Randomized Clinical Trials"

Be part of the conversation! On Wednesday, October 8th our CTML Seminar Series welcomes Dr. Devan Mehrotra, Vice President of Biostatistics at Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) and Adjuct Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mehrotra will present his talk on “Covariate Adjustment Using Treatment-Blinded Covariate Selection Within Randomized Clinical Trials." This talk will take place at 12:00PM at Berkeley Way West, 5th Floor, Room 5401. Speaker will be presenting remotely*

When estimating treatment effects in randomized clinical trials, the primary goal of covariate-adjustment is to improve precision and/or mitigate bias. In current practice, covariates for the analysis model are pre-selected. We propose an alternative approach in which a pre-specified treatment-blinded algorithm is used to identify covariates that are jointly associated with the observed trial outcome of interest, followed by a corresponding covariate-adjusted analysis for treatment effect estimation and inference. The utility of our proposal is illustrated using real data examples and simulations involving continuous, binary and time-to-event endpoints.
